As part of our Assignment 2 and in addition to the unit plan we are required to write a 500 word essay justifying the strategies and the ICTS used throughout the unit plan. As with any other essay it is important that I use a range of relevant references, include an intro, body (reasons) and conclusion and use appropriate in-text referencing.
After reading through the week 8 learning path and looking at the criteria sheet I have also come to the understanding that it is critical that I refer to the RAT (Replacement, Amplification and Transformation) framework as well as relevant pedagogical frameworks such as Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy.
I am normally pretty confident with essay writing but I have to nail the unit plan before I can even think about the essay.
That’s tomorrows job as I am finally signing out for today! Happy studying!
Throughout the week 8 learning path we learnt a lot about using ICTS in student assessment. Although it is not a requirement of Assignment 2 to use ICT in our assessment I still think it is valuable to know how and why we should use ICTS in this way.
Here are a few reasons:
- Students have the opportunity to use ICTS to produce a different type of product
- ICT can be used to expand the audience and use of the student’s product – it could be shared on youtube, facebook, via email and more!
- ICT can be used to improve the efficiency of gathering evidence of student learning – I can use an app called Evernote on my Ipad to record observations and results of all students in my class and;
- ICT can be used to track student progress

After a long day at uni I have finally got through the learning paths for weeks 4,5 and 8 and have 3 more blog posts to do before I’m finished the learning journal component for assignment 2, woohoo!
Whilst beginning to work on Assignment 2 I began thinking about how I can differentiate student learning with the ICTS I choose to implement in my classroom. There are a large number of ICTS available out there and I think it is important for me to think about which ICTS will best suit the needs of my students.

I understand that to be successful in assignment 2 that I need to embed a range of engaging and relevant ICTS into student learning experiences. Although I am aware of many ICTS I am worried about how I can make them relevant to what I am hoping to teach.
As I mentioned in an earlier blog post I know that I need to ensure I use the RAT framework as a guide and ensure that most of my learning experiences are using ICTS at either an amplification or transformation stage. I feel that I should limit ICTS at the replacement stage to an absolute maximum of one or two activities as, if I rely on ICTS as a replacement too often it will result in a poor grade for the assignment.
I am going to refer to Bloom’s (digital) taxonomy to help me plan effective learning experiences.
In the week 5 learning path something interesting was mentioned by a teacher about the difficulties she experienced when teaching students about money, in particular, coins and change. When you think about it, for most people today it is rare that we use coins or even notes to pay for things. I know personally that I always rely on my debit card to pay for things, even if it’s just at the corner store.
As technology changes children are not as exposed to experiences such as counting change to pay for an item. I know that when I was a child I would receive coins for doing chores and put them in my piggy bank. Every now and then I would get excited about the money I had accumulated and count up the change inside it. Do children get this experience today? What other things that are still taught in school are children less exposed to in their own lives due to an increase in technology?

The learning path for week 5 addresses how we will find ideas for the learning experiences within our unit plans. Whilst it offers several suggestions including google, Pinterest was never mentioned.
Pinterest is my absolute favourite thing to use on the internet and I find it is an excellent tool in finding thousands of ideas for teaching and learning, including the use of ICTS in the classroom.
Pinterest is not limited to education, it covers almost every topic imaginable! Pinterest users have the opportunity to create a range of different ‘boards’ where they ‘pin’ different ideas.
On my Pinterest account I have several boards ranging from photography and fashion to travel and of course education.
I will definitely use Pinterest to gain ideas for the learning experiences within my unit plan.

I’ve been thinking about assignment 2 and I’ve come up with some initial ideas that will hopefully help me to get started.
I have a real passion for teaching, particularly early childhood and it is for this reason that I’ve decided to stick to what I know best for this assignment and that is Prep.
My favourite subject to teach would be English. I love exploring, discussing and recreating texts with my students. I find that everyone involved is engaged in the task and I can select texts to explore that relate to my students, their needs and interests.
One of my favourite stories as a child was Possum Magic by Mem Fox. I personally loved how Hush the baby Possum went on a journey around Australia with his grandmother, exploring different places and food and thankfully, as he tried different foods, Hush became visible again.
Many themes can be connected to this book and these include invisibility, magic, adventure and food. All themes in which I think you would agree, small children would love.
Whilst I thought of many great activities to include in a Possum Magic unit I struggled to see how I could implement ICTs.
I will keep exploring and hopefully I can go ahead with this idea.

In class this semester we have been talking a lot about the RAT framework. RAT, an acronym, stands for replacement, amplification and transformation. How we use ICTs in the classroom can be related to each of these stages of the framework. Let’s take a closer look…
R = At the replacement stage we simply use technology to replace a previous form of instruction. This could be as simple as asking students to type their notes in a word document rather than write them in a notebook.
A = At the amplification stage technology is used to increase productivity and efficiency without changing the fundamental idea. An example of this could be creating a video summarising said notes from their class.
And most importantly;
T = At the transformation stage new ideas could be created using different technologies. Using the previous example of notes taken in class, students could use these notes to inform a video presentation. They could use a free video making website such as Powtoon to create a video explaining their understanding

I have begun looking at assignment 2 for my university course EDC3100 ICT & Pedagogy. We are required to design a unit plan for a grade and subject of our choice. Our unit plan must be three – five weeks in length, approximately 10 – 15 lessons and most importantly, it must incorporate ICTS into the teaching and learning process.
I have chosen to use The Australian Curriculum to develop my unit plan. Since I am majoring in early childhood I will probably pick a year level between prep – year 3.
I am excited to develop this unit plan and start thinking of some ways in which I can engage students in the unit through the effective use of ICTS.
